I admit. I was the one who used to say the 'ties' version, but that was because I made a link to the verb 'advertise'. I had been taught to pronounce the right way with a [tis], but lately I started hearing more and more [taiz] version. I thought it was a modern way to pronounce, and almost adopted this pronunciation!

Couldn't it be that the reason for the mispronunciation is that the word derives from the verb advertise whose last syllable has the dipthong /taIz/ and that you wouldn't expect a change in pronunciation when converting into the noun by adding the suffix? I like your lessons!

The /aɪ/ of /taɪz/ in General American /ˌædvərˈtaɪzmənt/ is actually a diphthong (=two different vowels in one group). The "long" version of /ɪ/ is /iː/.

American English speakers shorten “advert” further, and we say “ad”. As in: “I need to run an ad on Marketplace to sell my rower.” Also, I’m curious as to how Britons (or is it ‘“Brits”?) pronounce “advertise”?

I dont know if english is a "living language" but my mother tongue is and I view pronounciation as a success as long as you are understood. Language is not about who follows rules the best, its about being understood.

Mind you, 'advertisement' is a nominalisation of the verb 'advertise', which entails the pronunciation [taiz] as it ends in an 'e'. The American version follows the verb pronunciation. In BE, indeed, it comes here to a reevaluation of the syllable, as in other forms of nominalisation in BE, this time of adjectives, e.g., 'private' -> 'privacy', 'mobile' -> 'mobility'.
