It IS possible to reduce your risk for dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, lewy body dementia, etc. A 2021 study based out of Japan showed that older adults who had emotional loneliness were 60% more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease within 5 years compared to those who were not lonely. They asked 3 specific questions to determine if someone was emotionally lonely and a yes answer to any of the 3 items meant the person was emotionally lonely and at risk. This is one of many studies to show that how you live your life really does impact your risk for dementia. Watch the video, answer the 3 questions yourself, then let us know in the comments below how you plan to overcome emotional loneliness.

In case you haven’t met me, my name is Natali Edmonds and I am a board certified geropsychologist. That means that I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with older adults. One day, while hiking a trail, I came up with the idea for Careblazers and I decided to see if posting videos online could provide help to the many other Careblazers in the world who don’t get to have help come directly to them in their homes. I hope that this work helps you in some way on your caregiving journey.

Being alone eliminated stress for me. I'm 81 and very selfish. I love it and so do my dogs. I answered no, to the 3 questions. Thanks for the video.

I live with a toxic, manipulative person and suffer from emotional loneliness because of it. Stress is through the roof. Living in a state of chronic stress, fear and anxiety, coupled with poor sleep will put anyone at risk for dementia. I would much rather live alone with my own company.

it all depends on what kind of personality a person has. I for one, I'm ok with myself ND one thing that helps me most is my connection with GOD THROUGH PRAYERS. 0RAYERS OR TALKING TO GOD IS VERY IMNATE IN MY PERSONALITY. I ALWAYS FEEL THAT LIGHTHEARTEDNESS, ONCE I'VE SHARE WITH HIM, HOW I FEEL ND ALWAYS ASKS FOR GUIDANCE. I FEEL CALM ND ND COMFORTABLE WITH MYSELF. GOD BLESS YOU MAM FOR THE HELP YOU SHARE WITH US.

I’m glad you mentioned perception, that’s super-important. As an only child, alone-time is perfect for me!

I have always been alone but have never felt lonely. Every where I went I had connected. I traveled the world alone and had deep connections with locals. Now I’m married and live in a city where NO ONE looks at each other, if you’re looking for friends something is wrong with you, political tensions are huge barriers. I am so bummed out I’m alive. I live in a tunnel void of life. No matter how I try it’s been impossible to connect.

Today my son sent a video of his kids, 5 and 2 talking thru a long plastic pipe at the playground. He does such things often and I FaceTime with friends and my kids and grandkids, I have 7!😂😂🎉😊

Fascinating video and study. My mom with dementia moved into a group home when my dad could no longer care for her. She has flourished in the group home and in my opinion her dementia has slowed it's progression. However, my dad now lives by himself and often feels isolated and lonely. He also doesn't enjoy the company of strangers so a senior center is out of the question. Thanks for sharing the results of this study!

So how do pets factor in for lowering your risk, or for helping dementia patients ? May be a topic for another video. Hello to Nico.

The big takeaway is people who feel they genuinely want friends/companionship but don't have it are the ones who should have some concern.

How about if you have a dog or a very active social life? I also think poor diet ie one full of sugar and carbs and little to no exercise is a major risk for developing dementia. Eat a Keto diet low in sugar and carbs, and you WILL be so much healthier physically and mentally.
Also the Japanese way of life is so different to Western cultures. First off they are A LOT healthier and are one of the longest living people on the planet.

I see so many studies about reducing risk. When I compare the nutrition and lifestyle recommendations with the life of my husband and his brother, 84 and 87, respectively, I find the conclusions for risk reduction flimsy. Correlation not causation. These two men had military careers, had professional jobs after their military service, were physically fit and active, married, well-educated, cared for homes, children, and pets. One drinks, the other doesn't. Both developed AD later in life. How far removed from large statistical studies are these two cases? Significantly. Why did both develop AD? Obviously, we don't know. What we do know is that their mother had AD, though it was called dementia then. She lived to 98. I wish researchers would talk to us.
