I’m an expert at breaking code. Every time I write it.

I absolutely agree with you, but I interned at a cyber security company for a bit when I was in high school, and they basically laughed it off when I asked if they actually knew how to program. One guy knew a bit of JavaScript, but that was about it. They just handed me a PDF with everything to check and which tools to use -- I thought that was normal at the time.

Nowadays, I am a software engineer by trade, but I have found plenty success pen-testing just based on the knowledge I gained building secure systems. It honestly baffles me how they got away not even knowing a bit of Python for custom tooling or anything, but evidently you can.

I starting in Cybersecurity and CTFs. I'd like to see more where you relate low level programming with security issues.

I would also suggest: find someone who knows about as much as you do, and tag-team online CTFs and other challenges with them. You'll keep each other from getting discouraged/stagnant, and having a second perspective is very helpful when you get stuck.

Cybersecurity is not only related to offensive security field. Ppl may think that it is the only one choice. Thanks for the video.

im tired of people in Cyber making excuses for not learning how to code.
thank you for this.

1. learn shell/bash/zsh (and learn perl one liners (or python one-liners))
1. learn to use pfsense or some router operating system (ddwrt openwrt tomator)
1. learn to do fuzz testing.
1. Learn dbg. Olly used to be the big boy for windows JMPing binaries. IDA, Ghidra (and maybe Cutter). They're called debuggers.

That's literally how I learned in the early 2000s. It took like 3 days.

Depends, if your job is just to comply with regulations, you mostly need to know how to go though the motions, because it is just show anyway and actually knowing what is going on is more a burden than useful, because you then see how much this is just show or even reduces security.

Yes I know only first 2 things, but I will probably learn 3rd more

If you do governance and policy within the cybersecurity field, you don't need to even touch code. You don't need to read it and you don't need to write it. His advice is more gear towards the technical side of cyber security whether that's offense or defense.

Learn to code = learn C and partially assembly, os and computer architecture, memory management. JS is not an option

Because learning to code equates to understanding how systems work

Know this firsthand as a cyber major at Saddleback College myself. The only difference between the cyber AS and the computer science AS is one class.
