On 7 March 1945, the Ludendorff Bridge (1919) at Remagen was captured by US troops. Its capture enabled the Americans to establish a crucial bridgehead on the eastern side of the Rhine. The Germans tried to destroy it multiple times and it finally collapsed ten days later. #WW2

The Ludendorff Bridge was built during #WW1 to help deliver reinforcements to the German troops on the Western Front. Between the wars, it was hardly used. After its destruction during #WW2, it was deemed not important enough to justify rebuilding the bridge.
