This makes me wish I had a buddy to just do drills with.

This is sooo true! Yes high intensity is important but I love to flow roll for this exact reason. You cannot be technically sound if it’s a speed race / head hunt all the time.

Man, thank you for saying this!!!

As a personal trainer and a purple belt, I know all too well the dangers of overtraining not just BJJ or resistance training, but any high intensity exercise or sport.

Too much meathead-ery is prevalent in combat sports where training hard ALL THE TIME and condemning others who have a more balanced approach to their training and fitness (ehem JOE ROGAN fanboys ehem) is a thing. It’s just not the mentality to have if longevity in your chosen sport is important to you.

The problem is that I rely on the gym instructor and sadly most of them don't think this way.

Precisely the kind of Coach/Instructor I was looking for..
Specially because of having some physical issues..

O.m.g I needed to hear this. With work and everything else maintaining consistency with a high intensity level is just not realistic at all. Thanks for the sharing. I repeatedly run into this issue at both of the sports I’ve done. Can you share more on how we balance physical training and mental and technical training — on a weekly or monthly basis for example?

Awesome reminder that hard sparring all day every day isn’t smart at all, too unsustainable

Good sound advice...sometimes you go hard medium and light
Then flow style drilling and then technical aspects where you work maybe escape from headlocks.
I do.this approach depending on who I roll with ...noone OnE roll style should be approached the exact same way with everyone.

I am not going to go all out on a partner who has been in class for a week the same with someone who has trained for 8 months LoL

Not true there is a phoocal limit to playing chess, your brain takes up a lot of energy and you'll play worse and worse.

Calling bjj rolling "sparring" is cringe
