Many, many years ago I was walking home outside of Nashville. I became part of a group of young black people who accompanied me through their neighborhood but stopped at an invisible line that they would not cross. Being from a rural area of the north where I could count the number of people of color that I had even seen at that time on one hand…(I thank God everyday that my peculiar upbringing had never included racial bias, ) I was a little surprised. I find it so incredibly sad that 52 years later Tennessee, a physically beautiful land, with wonderful people, still has such an abhorrent display of ignorance.

These are the people I have been praying for for decades. For the first time in a long time I have hope, hope for a country who has thrown away the blood, sweat and tears that our parents and grandparents fought for to give their children a better life. A hope the youth will regain and exceed all the work my generation does not appreciate what we were given from all those who protested, walked in strike, fought and died to give us. My new hope is that these young men inspire a new generation who appreciates education, the strength to stand up and use their voices and to fight to succeed and surpass what my parents and grandparents achieved. Thank you is not enough, so I give you my continued prayers for the battles you have ahead of you. This is the first time in decades I have hope that the fight is reignited and taken to the finish line. ❤
