I received the new Prismacolor Amethyst and Orchid. Did they change? What is different and what is the same? Should you run out to find the old Lilac and Lavender? Find out now

Anything in the purple family drives me crazy because it makes mud so fast. It's always too gray for my liking. I am constantly grabbing Derwent and Lyra purples because I don't have problems with layering oils, just blending waxy ones. I am not fond of that Orchid color but I will have to play with it. I have about four lavender prima pencils though to work through first, its going to be a while.

The PR206 thing made total sense to me. I have a lot of watercolors. We will see which other pencil companies say anything

Lori, you are so damn cool. Thank you for showing us. I honestly couldn't afford to get new stuff right now, but I don't even worry about it at all with your information. I haven't seen your dragon in ages. Is he okay?

My set of Prismas didn't have the the old or the new colors, so I bought what Lindsay (frugal crafter) suggested as good alternatives; Cezanne's Periwinkle 027 to replace lilac, and. Arteza's A062 or A 408 depending how old the set is, to replace Prisma's orchid. There are other colors too that were close if you'd like to see if you already own something that closely resembles the missing Prisma colors. I'm new to coloring, and Prismas was my only set so I didn't want to miss out on any shades of purple!

Thank you Lori, I was worried as Lilac was the first color I actually used up (purples and greens go fast in my house). Still feel like a newbie in the coloring world and I always appreciate your insight.

Newell brands, prismacolors parent company said simply 'the 2 discontinued colors are due to the inability to continue resourcing the materials" lol. Was like ok. They also said new ones would be as close as possible. So yeah..

Thanks for this. I already purchased a new set of Prismas (because I needed them) so I have an extra lavender and lilac. I also own Arteza, and after looking at my color chart they seem to be ahead of the game when it comes to the purple colors. So, no worries from me lol.

Hi, I'm mostly a hobby watercolor artist and a total pigment nerd. So last fall there were sadly a few pigments that were discontinued by the automobile industry and we arty folk have to live with this decision because our market just isn't big enough for the pigment producer. The good thing with PR 206 is that PR 179 Perylene Maroon is very similar than the Quinacridone (206) one. Both have a reddish and a brownish version and Winsor and Newton professional watercolors have already replaced this pigment in their colors (Permanent alizarin crimson has the red version and brown madder the brown version). I and others have both and they look so similar that it's really hard to tell them apart. So I think for all colored pencil users that pencils containing PR206 can probably be replaced similar so that the difference is not that much.
Sad for us watercolor users is the other Quinacridone pigment being discontinued the same time PO 48 Quinacridone burnt orange. It's only one of two really transparent oranges and the only one I know which is a transparent, earthy and highly lightfast pigment. I love both pigments very much, but at least one of them is easily replaced. I just started using colored pencils so I have no clue if PO 48 is being used there as well or PR 168 which is also a very beautiful red which is being discontinued.

I was hoping part of the change was to improve the lightfastness of those colors. Silly me. 😂
