What the U.S. education system can learn from the developing world: Adam Braun at TEDxUNLV

Adam Braun is the Founder of Pencils of Promise, an award-winning organization that has built more than 150 schools across Africa, Asia and Latin America. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. Adam, when you got to the part about movement in the classroom, I was about to tell you that this can be seen in Montessori classes - and then I saw that Jan P already posted a similar comment below. The main difference is that, in a Montessori class, it's movement with a purpose and independent and interdependent child-centered learning. One of the great advantage of establishing alternative schools in underdeveloped countries is that the government is not as likely to interfere and tell you how to do it. Where children are being neglected and there's no all-powerful educational bureaucracy, there's likely to be more freedom to individualize and teach kids the way that they actually learn.

I think also with forcing our kids to sit and not move we're actually teaching them to be more lethargic which maybe causing them later on to be more lazy and less likely to be physically active which is an increase in cardiovascular disease.
