I love the Netherlands but speaking about food it's completely 50/50 experience for me. A lot of typical food is not the best choice for a vegetarian :) And all these mayonese, fries and a lot of bread and so on don't look like a healthy lifestyle. At the same time, I always very happy with how much various food of great quality I may find in supermarkets in the Netherlands! There you can avoid things like typical food and just buy great vegetables, chocolates, decent yogurt and a lot of vegetarian snack options as well!
Thank you Bart for great videos!!

Have you heard of "Children to Holland'?. If not Ill explain. CTH each summer for three weeks invited inner city kids in London for a holiday in Holland (to get them out of town). Three of my four went every year. Now to the point ... My three stayed with three families across Holland. On their return the Dutch parents did an over packed lunch for the children on their return (extremely kind). Always being too much, they could never eat all. Upon their return I did. So I got to try all. Even de of het drop. I tried and survived. And now like! So, a thumbs up for all Dutch food.

I am loving the Dutch course- thank you! My Mum and Grandma are Dutch so I am familiar with 'chocolate hail' on bread and croquettes. I LOVE salty licorice which my Grandma used to keep in her kitchen drawers and us children would try and steal. SO yummy. My own children try and source it for me as a treat these days!! But my Grandma always spoke about Dutch thought this was an iconic Dutch food/treat?

My Grandma is from the Netherlands and she would always give us a slice of bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles. De boterham met hagelslag is my favorite.

After a friend of mine went to the Netherlands and told me how wonderful it was and shared pictures, I thought to myself how I'd like to go. And anywhere that I resolve to travel, I make it my business to learn the language and culture. I absolutely will not go to another country without first learning the language and about the customs and culture first. So, another language added to my list! The food seems interesting. I'm willing to try anything at least once.

Hallo leerar Bart! I'm from Brazil and just have started watching your classes! You are an amazing teacher, congrats! About the food there's no comparison with brazilian food because I've never tried dutch food, but I think that in Brazil we have more flavors and options. Best wishes!

Just a note - The Dutch 'hagelslag' is the American 'chocolate sprinkles' or the English 'chocolate hundreds and thousands' (don't ask me why they're called hundreds and thousands, I haven't a clue and I was born there.

After only a handfull of these, I can easily visit Amsterdam and get around with basic vocab!
What a wonderful feeling to order food and go shopping, get directions and easy conversations right of the boat.

Dank je wel!

Thank you for the videos. I am watching them one by one. Learning Dutch is my retirement project as I am Oma for two Dutch children. I bring back the drops when I visit. I think they are terrible, but addictive for some odd reason.

All my favorite things!!!! Every time I am in NL I bring home a jar of Calve (met stukjes!) and 2-3kg of drop! And I usually have to get a satekroket at least once while I am there. The only food I am sad this video is missing though is kaapsalon.... also it doesn't mention the snackmuur - which I found the most leuk the first time I visited the NL.

Honest opinion. When I visited Amsterdam I wasn't a fan of the sweet things like hagelslag and stroopwaffeln but I had many delicious coffees and pancakes and french toast, sandwiches and some Mexican food as well.

Thank you for share your tips about Dutch culture, it will be really interesting to eat such plates, one could be very prejudicious with food, but until you taste it you can't say if it's good or not.
