November 8th, 1997. Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield and Michael "Double M" Moorer clashed for the 2nd time after their epic 1st encounter that took place a little more than 3.5 years ago.
The following titles were on the line;
i) IBF Heavyweight Championship (Moorer’s 3rd defense)
ii) WBA Heavyweight Championship (Holyfield’s 2nd defense)
This was the 1st and only time in which Moorer was trained by the great Freddie Roach.
Prefight records; Holyfield 34(23)-3, Moorer 39(31)-1.
After their 1st fight that took place on April 22nd 1994, both fighters went on to pick up 4 wins and 1 defeat each before colliding again in the squared circle.
In June 1996, Moorer became the IBF Heavyweight Champion for the 2nd time via a razor thin SD12 over Axel Schulz.
Between November 1996 & March 1997, Moorer made 2 successful defenses of the title and for his 3rd defense he was slated to take on Holyfield who looked to redeem himself against the man who handed him his 2nd career setback.
In November 1996, Holyfield scored a huge upset over Iron Mike Tyson with a stunning TKO11 win to become WBA Heavyweight Champion for the 3rd time.
7 months later, Holyfield retained the title in his 1st defense against Tyson in a rematch via DQ3. It was a bout infamously remembered as “The Bite” and was named the Event of the Year 1997 by The Ring.
For his 2nd defense, Holyfield had his eyes set on avenging his defeat to Moorer that took place 42 months ago.
Entering the bout, the 35 year old Holyfield who was the 3.5-1 betting favorite had notable wins over Carlos De Leon, Tyrone Booze, Chisanda Mutti, Henry Tillman, Ricky Parkey, Ossie Ocasio, James Tillis, Pinklon Thomas, Ray Mercer, James Douglas, Bert Cooper, Michael Dokes, Larry Holmes, Riddick Bowe, George Foreman, Dwight Muhammad Qawi (2x), Alex Stewart (2x) & Mike Tyson (2x).
On the other hand, the 29 year old Moorer had triumphs over top oppositions such as Leslie Stewart, Alex Stewart, James Smith, Vaughn Bean, Frans Botha, Axel Schulz, Bert Cooper, Evander Holyfield & Frankie Swindell (2x).
It was an explosive back and forth battle that ultimately went in favor of Holyfield who scored 5 knockdowns and captured his HUGE VENGEANCE via RTD9 to become the 3x IBF Heavyweight Champion.
In round 3, Holyfield was cut on the right side of his forehead due to an accidental clash of heads and timeout was called by referee Mitch Halpern. After an inspection by ringside physician Flip Homansky, Holyfield was given the green light to go on as the cut was in no way severe and did not bother him for the rest of the fight.
In round 5, Moorer was floored with a 3 punch combination.
In round 6, Moorer lifted Holyfield up and carried him to the corner possibly out of sheer frustration.
In round 7, Moorer was decked twice by fusillades of blows that ended with an uppercut each time.
In round 8, Moorer was down twice again courtesy of Holyfield’s beautiful combination punching and appeared to be finished at the second knockdown. However, Moorer showed unparalleled determination and still managed to beat the count after hitting the canvas for the 5th time in 24 minutes.
Before the start of round 9, Homansky ruled that Moorer was in no position to continue after an examination to the disappointment of the Pennsylvanian southpaw who wanted to carry on against his best interest.
