Forget the critics, this movie and it’s soundtrack are phenomenal. It’s the story of a tormented broken man who finds healing within the mountains in the ways of the samurai. A man who found direction and peace, who humbled himself. A man whom through his transformation even brought courage to the emperor to change the course of japans history. And these critics say this was a flop? Masterpiece!

This movie soundtrack is my all time favorite. I listen to it practically everyday. This one and a small measure of peace… hits that place where words have no space, just emotions. Masterpiece!!!!

I remember when I was thirteen years old and this movie was released in theaters. I begged my parents to take us to see it which I very rarely asked them to do for movies released in theaters. Even then I was a critic. Something deep down instinctive told me this movie would be something very original and unlike any cinematic story-telling experience, and we were not disappointed. I vividly remember that both my parents and my younger brother all agreed it was a compelling and fascinating movie. ...then a few weeks later, around the same time, I was watching tv at home and the "professional movie review critics" were sitting in their CNBC discussion day-time tv setting, and they were all clucking and prattling together about how they all agreed The Last Samurai is a film flop, a failure of a movie, that allegedly it's over-hyped and not actually a respectable or original film. The fools! Even as a thirteen year old child I strongly disagreed with their assessment and thought that they didn't have any idea what they were talking about.

The Last Samurai has messages about the problems of becoming an industrialized-modernized nation, and that as a result of this, a national-identity of a people or culture suffers and falls from grace because of it. The Last Samurai has messages about the distinction between honorable warfare as opposed to dishonorable acts of war. The Last Samurai has messages about preserving history and heritage and traditions. The Last Samurai has a message about alcoholism's innate inability to solve one's problems. It has many valuable conceptual messages interwoven into the story and I think you'd have to be pretty thick and dim not to appreciate this film's worth.

It was a real shame that this soundtrack competed that same year with The Lord of the Rings for the Oscar. This soundtrack is simply beautiful and flawless, and it deserved its trophy.

This music makes me feel so vulnerable, I loved the movie but without the soundtrack it wouldn't be the same. Will always reminds me to try harder and be more courageous, open minded, honest, honourable, just to do the right things despite all the pressures of our shallow contemporary world.
Even one million men screaming lies won't make them truth. We still have a choice who we are going to be, be good, perhaps one day, someone will tell how we lived...
