I 'Drove' Ford's Hands-Free Driving System In The New Mach-E GT!

Ford is now the second to bring a hands-free driving system to market, promising it will be more widely usable than GM's SuperCruise system. The hardware is already on most Mustang Mach-E electric crossovers sold in the USA, and will be introduced on the 2022 F-150 + Lightning and Expedition. Lincoln models will receive the system under the brand name "ActiveGlide". How does it work and how well does it work? I was able to sample the tech for a day, here are my thoughts.

In this video, Blues Clues disengaged more times in 14 miles than my Tesla’s Autopilot does in 500 miles. Hopefully they improve it quickly before more people use it.

They need to have an audible sound when it disengages !

Love our Mach'E's and cannot wait to try out Blue Cruise. I have a 67-mile one-way commute all interstate!

Alex, will you be able to review the autonomous systems on EV6 and Ionic 5?

Thank you for covering this in-depth. Self driving is the most important consideration for my next car.

Older GM vehicles don't have the newer "Global B electronic architecture" required to support best version of Super Cruise. This shouldn't be an issue with upcoming new vehicles from GM.

I love what Ford is offering with the Mache E. Seems like a great first offering of EVs from a traditional automaker.

Great review. But I can’t say I’m totally impressed with the tech. I have a ‘17 Honda CRV and this seem like an “almost” hands free version of adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Doesn’t seem like I’m missing out on much yet.

So both you @1:45 and Sandy Munro, had BlueCruise disengagements.. with NO audio alert/warning at all?! How do you know to take over?? Seems unsafe! Tesla beeps loudly at you and flashes... I see you noted that complaint @4:05, thanks.
If you can still steer a bit while it is engaged, how do you disengage in emergency? If you turn the wheel harder, does it disengage and let you take over? or push on brake disengages? Thanks!

Now when Blue Cruise flashes the warning, what happens if you completely ignore it and refuse to grab the wheel? Will it drive you in a straight line and into walls/cars, or will it slow you down to a stop?

Insane. Eyes on the road and no audio alert means you won't know it has decided to stop steering for you. It seems to disengage on normal highway curves.

I think there’s a lot of room for improvement tbh. If you watch Munro & Associates video from a few weeks ago the PR person admitted that it disengages around most corners/bends and was unclear if/when /why it disengaged (the PR person literally had to say “put your hands on the wheel” because Sandy didn’t know). I’m worried about this being in peoples hands more so than Tesla drivers…

I know it's not his lane, but would love to see him compare ADAS hands free driving systems from others, including openpilot

I like it when that Maserati cut in your line from right at 2:50, the system did not panic or brake.

Great video, Alex. I've been waiting impatiently for the OTA to get it active on my F150. I paid for the Active Prep Package and tried to get into the pilot program but to no avail. Wanted to try it out on two long road trips we had in August (nearly all of which were on major highways), but still waiting...

The Tesla repair vehicle was a nice "trolling" touch @5:04 @5:25 @5:49 etc

How does this compare to the comma ai openpilot system?

We need a specific review on Highway Drive Assist II on this newer Hyundai / Genesis.

So the Ford system seems more like supercruise generation 1 if the Ford can’t do auto lane changes. And does the Mach-e have the safety/autonomous alerts through seat vibration as in nearly all GM’s? I prefer that sort of notification over lights and audible
