How to Rip DVDs to Your Linux PC | Just Plain Tech (JPT)

Got any old DVDs you want to backup, copy, or watch on your phone? Along with a software called Handbrake, your Linux computer can easily get the job done.

You need to revisit this whole video. The default settings are definitely NOT the best settings for ripping DVDs. Try changing the profile to Matroska H.265 or Matroska H.264, setting the encoder to H.265 (Nvenc) (Nvenc uses the GPU to encode, much much faster usually), setting framerate to "Same as source" and "variable framerate", and hit "Add all" on the Subtitles page to automatically find and passthrough the embedded subtitles into subtitle files that can be turned on/off by the video player, and the same for Audio if you want to enable all the audio tracks for all the languages supported. Then, there's stuff I'm still fiddling with in the Filters section to improve the quality even more.

Will this work with just any DVD or are there versions with some stupid DRM shinanigans that resist Linux?

Neat! As someone new to linux and all that itll be nice to umm declutter and bring digital copies of all my childhood movies with me after i make the big move after college lol. Now i just have to figure out how to do this with vhs...

worked great, ubuntu-20.04.03 (prerequisites to do first and reboot before testing)
- sudo add apt-repository multiverse
- sudo apt install libdvd-pkg (I said ok/yes to auto/upgrades/etc)
- sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
- reboot, then test.

Hm… would it be possible to have this work remotely? I’m setting up a family-sourced (everyone adds movies as they wish) and I want to have it done via a simple, almost Redbox-style kiosk.

Basically:
1: family member inserts disc
2: handbrake does it’s thing to recognize the disk, parse the files, etc
3: on kiosk, family member selects tracks/subtitles etc
4: handbrake does the rest.
