Also recommend the John Ciardi translation which also has fantastic notes after each canto and maintains the verse and rhyme structure.

I read The Western Canon earlier this year, and yes--Bloom can't go more than five pages without a hat tip to ol' Bill Shakespeare. Maddening indeed.

Still good though. Also very sad to hear about Bloom's passing.

Excellent video !! "Dante assaults our senses" - so well-said. I agree that Musa's translation might be the "best" one, although in some cantos I've found Pinsky to better reflect Dante's subtleties. I'm actually using these 2 translations that you presented (Pinsky and Musa) to do a series of videos about the Divine Comedy, come by if you'd like. And thanks for the great comment...

The inferno was actually very managable to comprehend in difference to many other classics. The most interesting thing was that Odyssevs, from the Illiad and the Odyssey, was in the least bad layer of hell. I interpret it like Catholisism admire his type of character traits.

Dante haunted me during all my 8 years' school! I can stand him anymore! Do you find him interesting? Inferno is very good, purgatorio quite good, paradiso almost bad. Anyway, awesome book review as ever!

My Penguin Classics version is translated by Dorothy L. Sayers. I'm assuming it's a good translation...

Can’t believe you skipped the Aeneid in this series.
