Therapist analyzed the lyrics to Black Hole Sun by Soundgarden to discuss the pain of waiting and longing for something that you have no control over. This type of waiting can lead you to a place of despair, but it doesn't have to.

I was bullied for being small my freshman year in high school, but I had a gym class locker next to the QB of the football team, who was a sophomore at the time. He stuck up for me and made sure nobody would mess with me on his watch. That summer, which was 1995, he shot himself due to the pressures of how great a QB he was. The last memory I have of him is walking into gym class singing this song...his name was Michael Lauro from Agawam, MA and he's a true hero to me. I point to the sky every time I hear this song.

"Times are gone for honest men
Sometimes far too long for snakes"

Brilliantly said, Mr. Cornell. Rest in peace.

Dave Grohl said that one time in an interview when he was with Nirvana they jokingly described their music as a fusion the Beatles and Black Sabbath. Then when Chris first played this song to them, they realized THIS song is exactly that! They were blown away.

Chris Cornell explained the song's origins: "I wrote it in my head driving home from Bear Creek Studio in Woodinville, a 35-40 minute drive from Seattle. It sparked from something a news anchor said on TV and I heard wrong. I heard "blah blah blah black hole sun blah blah blah". I thought that would make an amazing song title, but what would it sound like? It all came together, pretty much the whole arrangement including the guitar solo that's played beneath the riff. I spent a lot of time spinning those melodies in my head so I wouldn't forget them. I got home and whistled it into a Dictaphone. The next day I brought it into the real world, assigning a couple of key changes in the verse to make the melodies more interesting, then I wrote the lyrics and that was similar, a stream of consciousness based on the feeling I got from the chorus and title." - RIP Chris Cornell

Love to hear your take on Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike, which features both Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder and contains a strong message which is very open to interpretation

Thanks for recognizing that longing. It's a struggle to be myself at times, but I remind myself to not dim my light to falsely satisfy that longing.

I remember when this song dropped. I was 16 and struggling with a lot of mental health issues in my life. The first time I heard this song on MTV, it was like Chris Cornell was giving voice to what I was feeling, and it made me feel less alone in my struggles.

This is one of those songs that is so unique that it’s timeless - even the music video gives me Twin Peaks vibes.

Love the other singles from Super Unknown as well - The Day I tried to Live and Fell on Black days - what an album !

Ngl when I was a kid in Australia in the 90s, the ad for this album came on TV and the snippets they showed of Black Hole Sun's music video freaked me out. Wasn't until much later into adulthood after I'd embraced horror that I came back and found what a banger this song was.

This song always seemed to me like the frustration of feeling like the whole world is off the rails and not able to be fixed or redeemed, so just wipe it. I have often felt like that a day this song always gave me encouragement that I wasn't alone in feeling that way. Maybe in its own way, it gives me hope to feel like my frustrations are validated, and that's really all I ever wanted. Thank you for enjoying this song!
