British families are facing a "living nightmare" in Rhodes after fleeing from burning hotels and awaiting rescue on the floors of shelters.

The first repatriation flights arrived on the fire-ravaged Greek island this morning to rescue thousands of stranded Britons as the wildfires continue to spin out of control.

In Rhodes, more than 16,000 people were evacuated by land and 3,000 by sea from 12 villages and several hotels.

Foreign Office minister Andrew Mitchell said up to 10,000 British tourists are currently on the island, many of whom ran for their lives.

Now, locals and tourists are also being evacuated from large swaths of Corfu as more blazes rip through the country on Sunday.

What about the people that live there. They have lost everything. No one is talking about them.

I love how The Sun flies in for an interview, but seemingly doesn't just fly the people back. 'Hey, tell us how much this sucks so we can get views and money. Help you? Don't be daft.'

Also, love how UK tourists are the news but the poor Greeks are just ignored..

Why are the holiday companies never prepared for emergency situations. They just take your money, then leave you to fend for yourselves. It should be standard industry practice to have emergency plans in hand.

These people having ago at the workers should be ashamed of themselves. I know they are in a high stress situation but hell everyone is, including the staff, the people who actually LIVE on the island! The tourists have lost out on their holiday, they will more than likely get their money back if they have adequate insurance and if they have lost any possessions it’s just their holiday luggage, which yes is awful but loosing your house in the fir e would have been worse. Seriously can anyone be nice these days?!
