Absolutely insane to me that an artist with as much magnitude as Alec Soth still comes off as being so down to earth, and so grounded. What a delightful conversation. Thank you both for this! Very inspiring.

I love Alec Soth, he is the opposite of a gatekeeper.

Talking about sourcing the teenage 'self' as an artist is so real; that pure making stage, uninhibited and unencumbered about knowing or not knowing anything, free without an established identity to hold you back 😭😭 sheesh, access to artistic mentorship at that phase (esp. at this level) I'm sure is life changing.

Thank you both for that. Early in the pandemic I stumbled on Soth's youtube videos and felt terribly inspired. I bought "Sleeping" and fell back in love with photography.

Amazing conversation, I can definitely feel I'm at that cynical stage of my work and wanting to rekindle that passion of something being new and interesting and magical.

“When I say I shot it on digital, I can feel the audience deflating.”

That is such a bummer sentence and sadly all too true. Even to myself, I’ll make a picture on digital, and then start to feel bad for liking it. Then convince myself it’s bad because it’s not film. It’s exhausting.

What an inspiration!! And a beautiful interview. Really appreciated hearing Alec talk about explaining his work to people while trying to get access to a subject.

Coming back around to say that it was really nice to hear about his decision to shoot digitally too 🤓

It is such a wonderful window in to the life of a art student and starting their artistic journey. It really showcases what students are going though on a day to day making, talking and living with art every day for 4 years. Working at a art college it is really fun to see this on a day to day . Alec you are always welcome to explore the college I work at!

Wonderful stuff! I've been to that talk in London Alec mentioned two weeks ago - always such a pleasure to listen to him! He also left a funny doodle in my copy of the Mississippi :)

Yeeesss! I'll watch this discussion after work. To be honest I found his YouTube channel and his lectures about books much more impactfull on how I do and see photography than, sadly, his Magnum class. Too bad he didn't continue the YT videos - that's the best "content" about photography out there. Anyway thanks Mr Soth for your generosity.

Hi Matt. This is a great interview. And I was so happy seeing Alec back on the screen. I have just bought the book and will be reading it again with a new understanding.
