so, I was thinking, couldn't we land something on the surface, dig a hole and fill it with propane to have a "base" there. And then fill a probe with the rocks and shoot it back?

It shouldn’t be difficult to estimate the atmospheric layer where extremophile life may exist. It would likely be at an elevation where pressure would be sufficient to prevent high temperature cell destruction ie. boiling. We see examples of this near volcanic vents in our own oceans.
