The Visual Novel is definitely the place to start. Now that it’s been patched, you won’t have to play it like you’ve got a randomiser mod installed! (the initial release was… rough to say the least)
The series has a reputation for being confusing to get into, but I think it’s a pretty fun time overall.

I’ve googled “fate anime watch order” at least 5 times. and every single time i give up bc everyone either wants to throw in a novel or give multiple choice answers to such a simple question.

As a fate fan that has been watching the series for a few years and has been actively playing fgo and keeping up with all the Type Moon works.

It doesn’t matter how you start. It just a matter of how much time you are willing to give. Cause other than fate/zero and fate/stay night anime(i am putting all the three route as one because they are retelling the same thing but from different choices the character makes). There is no other direct sequel for the anime(until they release Hollow/ataraxia anime) soo watch them how ever. They each explore differ characters themes and story points.

And tho not required, in my opinion reading the VN is also a good option cause you can see much more detailed interpretations of characters and you clearly see which choices leads to different routes and their bad ends. While the anime tries to make that all into a one concise story of that route.

Everyone tells you exact order, while I started years ago with "Carnival Phantasm" knowing nearly nothing about Fate because I watched a fan-dubbed scene of Rin vs Blu-Ray recorder and got interested. XD

Choose the one that looks the most interesting. It doesn't matter which, just go for it. If you want to watch more, do so. If you're satisfied with just that one, that's fine too.

Me thinking Id be confused but then I could remember every character from Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation from their birth name, courtesy name, nickname, and title. As well as their swords. And instrument names-
