28 year old Judy Garland was at a low ebb when, in a Manhattan night club, she met Sidney Luft, They began a passionate affair, and Luft managed the triumphant comeback performances that launched a new phase of Judy’s career.

But they were both drinkers, and their relationship was often stormy, they got married in a low-key ceremony at a friend’s ranch in 1952 and five months later they had a daughter Lorna and Joey soon followed.

Luft negotiated Judy’s most acclaimed movie role but the years of hard living took their toll on the marriage and there were frequent separations until it finally ended in a messy divorce.

At the end of his life in 2005, denying accusations that he had overworked her and mismanaged her money, Luft claimed he was still in love with Judy, but his own daughter in her memoirs
doesn’t portray him in particularly flattering terms.

So many parallels can be drawn here with Judy Garland's life and Marilyn Monroe and even Carrey Fisher. That old Elton John song "Candle in the Wind" fits them all succinctly.
