Still married to her unadventurous first husband, 21 year old Judy Garland began an affair with director Vincente Minnelli, twenty years her senior.

They got married in 1945 and on their joyful extended honeymoon, she threw away her pills and promised she was a reformed character.

Their daughter Liza was born nine months later, but Judy became depressed and ended up back on pills, putting a strain on the marriage.

Two hospital admissions and a course of electroshock therapy didn’t do much to help Judy’s problems and the studio eventually let her go. The marriage didn’t last much longer and they were divorced after six years in 1951.

Judy had already begun a tempestuous relationship with Sidney Luft who would become husband number three. Minnelli went on to make some of the best loved films of the 1950s. He had three further marriages as well before his death at the age of 81.
