I have a polish friend speaks absolutely perfect english but recently she had a surgery and told everyone the doctors were going to 'put her down' rather than put her under

My spanish teacher in high school was a Venezuelan man, sweet as can be, truly an incredible influence. And every single day before class I would teach him an english saying like "knock yourself out" and he would try to figure out a way to fit it in during the lesson. Every single time he did it, he'd give me sort of a nervous glance, but he always nailed it and I always gave him a thumbs up. Thank you for reminding me of one of my favorite memories from my youth.

The phrase "have your cake and eat it too" never made sense until my Polish friend said "you want to eat your cookie and still have your cookie"

I had a student that confused "butt dial" with "booty call" several times...

As a Polish person, I can relate. Idioms are the worst - and in every language :'D

I took the mistaken idea as "you're allowed to drink enough that it would knock you out if you so choose" and therefore "feel free to eat so much that it's the last thing you do".

As someone who use to edit papers for non-native English speakers... There are so many almost correct idioms that just make you laugh. Some are so close, yet so far. "Standing on Eggshells" Etc.

"The energy You put out into the party is not the energy you intended to" could be the title of my autobiography

Idioms are the hardest part to learn in almost any language, since the words get completely different meanings just for that idiom

I worked with a Romanian lass who didn't understand English idioms either, so she had fun with it instead and would interpret them in a sexual way and pretend to be offended and make a big joke out of it. I loved working with her because she had a wicked sense of homour.

But I made the mistake of once saying "I am totally down with the kids", you know, I am hip, cool, caught up with the latest trends, though being ironic, meaning that I am not.

And that was 2 weeks of her (jokingly) asking if I touch kids.

I love idioms - both in Polish and English. And I love that some translations would be a direct translations - it's hilarious to read!
