OpenWRT - x86 PC Installation - Live USB

Показать описание
In this video, we are going to install OpenWRT on x86 hardware, aka PC, server or laptop. This will give you the best performance thanks to the powerful hardware the x86 (Intel/AMD) architecture offer.
The steps is simple: create a live USB, connect all the cables and powering on the PC (with USB plugged in, of course)
It had been explained in the video about the images format, just to summary:
- combined-ext4 image - the partion can be resized to a larger one, but factory reset & fail safe mode is not supported.
- combined-squashfs - the partion is only 230 MB, resize is impossible. Factory reset and fail safe mode is supported.

Video timeframe:

00:00 - Introduction about OpenWRT on x86, build targets and images format
02:30 - Network interface cards supported by OpenWRT (with default build)
03:15 - Creating OpenWRT live USB with Rufus
04:13 - Install and boot up the PC with OpenWRT
05:02 - Basic OpenWRT setup on x86 PC
07:20 - Test and troubleshooting
08:08 - Disable IPv6 on OpenWRT on CLI
10:01 - Change OpenWRT LAN IP on CLI
11:30 - Final words

I remember helping a bit with Facebook on this. This is why we should keep our older motherboards to get our own Central Office

Great tutorial! Just two things I’d like to mention. First is it would be a good idea to keep the default lan port rather than switch it. If you ever need to reset your router to default, you wont need to replug everything. Second is after installing, you can use luci web configuration right away. Thanks for the great content. Keep it up!

Hey, great job on the video! I've been watching a few of your videos and they're all great. I'm not a beginner with OpenWRT, but I have been looking around for some good videos to watch about it. I've been looking for a new firewall server because mine is quite loud. The one I'm using is an HP Proliant ML110g7 which has good specs, and dual nics, but it is very loud under regular use. What is the one you are using in these videos? Did you build it or does it come built?

I'm really glad that I've found this channel, great work!

May you discuss lantiq modems which I believe it's the only modem chipset supported by openwrt.

I need to figure out how to tune settings like SRA, Bitswap, Vectoring and G.INP also is it really possible to tweak snr target?

Does this come with a web interface and all of the wireless device drivers built in?
Or is this just the very beginning and you have to add all those items manually?
Is squashfs better for install to USB and less writes to the filesystem?
I don't think the video really covered why the EXT4 vs quashfs choice rather than the size limitation.
Thanks!

Thank you for showed how to set up x86 PC installation! However, I have a couple questions. I've been experienced using OpenWRT on my Netgear R7800 with SQM on. It worked very well, but I never tried it on x86 PC. I'm planning to turn my old Ryzen 1700X with an intel 4 ports nic card into a router since I already got a 3700X. Is there any tutorial about how to install OpenWRT image into a 64GB SSD permanently? I'm a bit fairly average with linux terminal, so I'm still learning.

Wait! that's it? So OpenWRT runs form the installation thumb drive? At least that's how I understand it.

I am installing on a mini pc and am unsure how to setup the other 2 physical LAN ports in the interface config. Do I create a new interface and copy the br-lan interface settings?

Hi, I might be missing basic information here, but please bear with me — do I need an external modem in order to connect the router to the internet via the phone line?

Hi! I would like to ask some questions.
1. It's not compulsory to use USB sticks to make it a bootable drive for OpenWrt right? Any other methods than that?
2. If I want to install OpenWrt on my running file sharing server, must I backup all the files in it before doing that? As I seemed to see that it says writing image files will delete the contents inside the drive. If so, how I can do it in the proper way?
Thank you!

Thank you for this.
Just a question. I have a single board with intel with only one LAN, however if I plug a USB-Lan adapter will it work as second lan?
