I mean yes they dropped the Nukes to stop Japan prolonging the war but it was for the fact a invasion of the home isles would be a costly one as shown during the brutal island hopping campaigns and the with the Japanese refusing to surrender on any of those islands it showed the allies that although they probably could land on the home isles but resistance would be so bad for advancing armies it wouldn't be worth it.

What really made the japanese surrender was the largest encirclement in history (not the encirclement of kiev.) Where the japanese lost 500, 000 and the invading soviet army only lost 12000 to 20000 creating a loss ratio of approximately 1-30 or 1-45 bear in mind this was done in 16 days on a landmass the size of everything the germans occupied from the soviets. So what the germans could barley do in 2 years the soviets did in 16 days. There is solid evidence that generals were ready to give up after the soviet invasion and not the atom bombing, considering how the japanese government didn't give two shits about its people nor army and the firebombs were several times more destructive. Tokyo was turned into a well of fire. But firebombing japanese cities didn't cause the government to even slightly want to surrender. Let alone dropping bombs on them. After the millitary defeat inflicted by the soviets they gave up (wow the japanese definitely fought till the end omg) and it was very uncharacter considering that the soviets after discovering that they were literally dealing with the worst war crimes in the 2nd millenia after Christ after finding out about unit 731 and seeing literal ghost towns with chinese corpses laying around torn apart in the most vicious way imaginable, were going to execute as many officials as they could. And these people in power knew this and didn't want to surrender, but did. Meaning what stalin claimed about the losses isn't farfetched.

Japan was lucky during the 13th century. The Mongol armada was hit by an unseasonal typhoon. I think twice in 2 different seasons. Historically, islanders' armies are no match with continental armies. While the Mongol army was the epitome of a continental army and if they landed onto Japan with their full might, that would change Japan forever.
