It’s enlightening to see here the silent video example of Argerich using the praying mantis technique in what appears to be the Scarlatti K. 141 sonata.

You're never to old to learn something new and if you master it as well, it's one of the greatest feelings ever.

This has been a video I’ve frequented lately. It’s so interesting and something I’d love to dive into more. So glad you’re sharing this information. I really think a lot about what she said in regards of her technique style.. the reference her teacher made of praying mantis fingers/hands.

What I’ve realized over the years of diligent study is that we pianist think of how to move our hands in the most relaxed and efficient way to execute a passage flawlessly.. watching her play the Scherzo No 3, I can see her fingers do the grab and pull, which is not what I see a lot of pianist do.. it’s like she acquired a specific technique that is not really taught amongst pianist in general, yet she was able to go and run with it because it definitely works in her favor and with control.. When I imagine my fingers trying to move and execute in the same manner, it just feels different. Almost awkward even. Yet I am also using a different technique style of playing and moving my hands compared to how I do when I play the way I was taught with arm weight and all.

Ohh it’s just so interesting.. makes me want to continue experimenting with this style. It’s interesting. It’s almost like an organ style of playing with in shape fingers and moving in that way, but with the arm weight.. like rubber bands of speed, but with the right kind of delicacy if a piece of music calls for it..

God, I would just love to sit down, drink a coffee with her, and just talk about it with the style of technique she uses to play.. it would be so interesting if she ever took it upon herself to try and explain it a bit. I would love it so much.. super rare and interesting.

I’m always wary because of her age.. I feel sad I may never see her play live.. I really would love to before she ever declines in health.. what a rare gem she is. Truly.

My teacher taught this as “pearl playing, ” an apparently French technique to make each note symmetrical in sound

What a big Teacher, Vincenzo Scaramuzza, he’s an important figure of neapolitan school music. So thanks to Italy to have teached to Argerich, and gift us a wonderful artist.
