Breaking YouTube Content ID To See How It Works | Economics IRL

YouTube Content ID can break a channel, so I decided to break the algorithm. Using different songs, I look at which music triggers the algorithm and how long a song can play before Content ID issues a claim.

The 6 seconds theory doesn't hold, you can go on any Vine compilation, most which heavily relied on existing DMCA songs, and those Vines were no longer than 6 seconds. You can see the copyright flags in the description.

I only recognized one song out of your clips: Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock - It Takes Two

Amazing video.
Just wondering, did you try uploading 30 seconds, one minute or full song? And what if music is far in the background covered with dialogue?

It also depends on the label, the big labels are more likely to use content ID and some may even force removal. Some Indie and older content they don't bother, you have to opt-in to content id as an artists, and often there is a small fee.

While looking through the copyright ID information, it looks like content creators have to submit claims of ownership before YouTube will start flagging that content. Is it possible that owners of older music or music from other countries are just less likely to submit that ownership claim?

Nice test thank you for doing this.. Valuable information here on how the algorithm works

Man love your swagger in these videos! Do u have any expericence with instrumentals music? u know i just wanna put something not popular to the background while speaking. I feel like chances of Content iD identifying are really low. What do u think?

This was really helpful. I'm currently running my own experiment with copyright. It seems videos at 720 are sometimes allowed where the HD version was forbidden.

Nice video! I'm in a weird boat where I review new music so I'm perpetually fighting copyright although I could make the argument of fair use, filing that claim on each song in each video would be troublesome. The 7 second result is interesting!

Thank you so much! This is the exact video I was looking for.

This was a very informative set of experiments, thanks for sharing!

Were you at all worried that you would get copyright STRIKES vs. content ID copyright claims, since the strikes could've not only killed your guinea pig channel, but your YouTube account as a whole. Look forward to your thoughts!

Great video. Now here’s my very recent experience. I uploaded one of my original instrumentals a day ago. It’s an original composition, which means there are no music samples used within the track, from any artist(s) past or present. Yet, I got a copyright claim from Youtube. My track had the same title as an artist using Tunecore as their distributor. The claim said there were so many seconds of my original composition, that I’d copied from this other artists music! I’d never heard of the artist, nor their music. So, you’ve answered my theory, that Youtubes AI makes not only bad decisions, but very inaccurate ones. And when I listened to the track, it sounded nothing like mine/theirs in any way shape or form! Googles not as clever as they think 😂😂😂😂😂

I like this... I wonder if there are any other authors doing experiments on how the YouTube algorithm works. So far, this is super useful. I wonder if making a copyright claim against work that you can guarantee to be yours, ie using nothing but your ownnoriginal content, can give some level of protection too.

My main channel for years has used a 20 year old Japanese metal riff to open, never been dinged on upload or subsequently. Viewing this, I am feeling like it might not ever be dinged.
I do plan to change it once I get to 1K subs over there, but I'm not to 200 yet so not sure I should even worry.

Can I use some of this footage in a video I'm creating for uni exploring YouTube's content ID system?

Your dance definitely made me smile... :) Thank you for conducting this experiment. I have been quite active on Smule Sing and have a few cover songs over there in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and English languages, and only recently I was thinking about uploading my favorites among them to YouTube. But, I'm very apprehensive about it because I don't want to get copyright strikes, it's so embarrassing. Does changing the lyrics, or singing style, or using different instruments than the original to make the song, or an acoustic version, or to remix/toning down the song help avoid the content ID trigger somehow?

Can you run an algorithm to find features of songs that weren't caught by Content ID algorithm? Some features could be the channel's geographic location, song's origin location, volume.
