On this day in 1958 {January 26th} the Crickets performed "Oh Boy!" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'...
Two months earlier on November 25th, 1957 it entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #10 and spent 20 weeks on the Top 100...
Fifty seven days earlier on December 1st, 1957 was their first appearance on the 'Sullivan' show; on that date they performed "That'll Be The Day" and "Peggy Sue"...
R.I.P. Mr. Holley {1936 - 1959} and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}...

The most complete rock and roll musician who ever lived. And THAT ... from a guitarist of 57 years ... and THEN some.

Thanks for puting this on Youtube - I listened to this, under the sheets in the early 60's, in Scotland on Radio may have saved my school lunch money and bought the single - I can't remember, but listening to it makes me feel young and alive again, haha - I loved all Buddy Holly music. I was a bit before my time, apparently - good to hear it again Ax

On this day in 1958 {March 14th} Buddy Holly and the Crickets perform at the Granada Theater in Woolwich, London, England*...
At the time "Maybe Baby" {at #21}, "Peggy Sue" {at #78}, and "Oh Boy!" {at #100} were all on Billboard's Top 100 chart back in the U.S.A.
The theater had a seating capacity of 2, 434; and sitting in one of those seats was a fourteen-year old lad from Dartford, Kent named Mick Jagger...
* The twenty-five play dates at two sets a night tour began on March 1st, 1958 and would be the only time Buddy & the boys would appear in the United Kingdom...

I'm not one who's blinded by nostalgia. But damn, 50's music was badass in it's own way.

Tommy Allsup, the guitarist who toured with Buddy Holly on his ill-fated Winter Dance Party and who flipped a coin with Ritchie Valens for a seat on the airplane that took the lives of Buddy, Ritchie and the Big Bopper, died Wednesday (January 11th 2017), the Owasso, Oklahoma native was 85...
Tommy was scheduled to perform again this year at the Surf Ballroom on the anniversary of Buddy's death, as he had done many times in the past. Over the years he played with many other musicians (such as Roy Orbison and Willie Nelson) and, at one time, had a nightclub called the "Heads Up" after the coin flip that saved his life. Tommy's son recently appeared on NBC-TV's "The Voice"...
May he R.I.P.
