I've got a question for you... What is the natural propagation of a pumpkin like, without human intervention? Does an old pumpkin rot, releasing its seeds? Or do the roots or stems of the plant survive the winter and propagate? I live in Upstate New York. In other words, if I put my uncarved jack o lanterns in my garden before winter, will they preserve the seeds long enough to survive the winter and germinate?

Oh, there is a lot more to tell about pumpkin growing. Why did you not talk about "heavy feeder"?... because pumpkin is one of this kind of crops. They need a lot of food to grow. Mitrogen and phosporous are the main food they need. Ideal is to grow them together with corn and beans. (Three sisters).
You see there is a lot to talk about.

I would put just a tad of water on the sprout to jump start the growth of the pumpkin. I know this is kinda late but i hope it helps

Can i grow pumpkins with only one plant? My one plant is growing and it has buds but no flowers or baby pumpkins forming as of 7-19-2013 is it too late?

You say water when it needs it, but don't over water it. How often should it be getting water?
Also, for each seed, how big does each plant get, when thinking about spacing?

Wonder why I keep getting the tiny punkin' starting out and before it
can blossom it atrophies and falls off.  These are the female blossoms  that are close to the vine.  Does anybody know?
