Famed futurist and co-founder of String Field Theory Michio Kaku has spent his career inspired by the search for a grand unifying theory of everything – carrying on Einstein’s quest to unite the four fundamental forces of nature, penning numerous bestselling books along the way.

Sir Roger Penrose is a world-renowned physicist, best known for his work on general relativity and sharing the Wolf Prize for Physics with Stephen Hawking for their work on black holes. His books include The Road to Reality and The Emperor’s New Mind.

The Institute of Art and Ideas features videos and articles from cutting edge thinkers discussing the ideas that are shaping the world, from metaphysics to string theory, technology to democracy, aesthetics to genetics. Subscribe today!

I love Penrose so much. To be so sharp and so enthusiastic at his age, what a gift to humanity.

My attraction to MK was short lived, Roger Rules !!!

Nice to see Michio directly challenged on String Theory and getting a bit fired up.

This is how you argue as a scientist: you do not speak with certainty until you are absolutely sure. Michio Kaku speaks on every topic as if he knows everything

Roger Penrose is always good for calling out people who try to confound different things to muddy the water of the argument. Throwing together a terrible mishmash of dubious theories is not going to magically create one good theory.

Very interesting topic to discuss. I would like to hear what professor Penrose answered next.

The only debates I'm here for. Two passionate scientists that can make a case of their views like decent human beings.

MK challenges Penrose to ‘come up with his own theory’ forgetting that Penrose has developed so many theories that it is almost impossible to study modern physics/mathematics without hearing his name! 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Michio Kaku is as crackpot as it gets, trying to lure all opponents into accepting his circular building of nothing balancing on his beliefs is as good as anyone’s else’s by claiming there is some beliefs in everything.

It’s wrong. It’s enough. Please give room to those doing proper testable science!

When was the last time Kaku actually published a scientific paper? Penrose vs Kaku is like killing a mosquito w an atom bomb

I AGREE WITH SIR ROGER PENROSE. IT WOULD TAKE A PARTICLE ACCELERATOR THE SIZE OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM TO PROVE OR DISPROVE STRING THEORY.

I'd love to know if string theory proponents actually still think they're ever gonna have a big breakthrough or if, at this point, they've just succumbed to the sunk cost fallacy

Kaku is all image, Penrose is substance

I have to agree, I think we don’t have enough proof of this universe to even be close to discussing that. For all we know it may be completely impossible.

Poor old Uncle Rodger, bored out of his mind, thinking I’m wasting my time here, I could be doing something else!

As a physicist, I have serious objections to String Theory - since it violates the basic need for any theory to be testable. It maybe a lot of interesting mathematics, but that doesn't necessarily make it 'physics' (meaning relating to the real world). I am glad that a stalwart like Penrose could take on Kaku. I also notice Sabine in the panel, and she too I believe discounts String Theory.

Penrose couldn't control his laugh.

When did Kyoko last publish an article in the peer reviewed scientific literature?
String Theory is a Mathematical Philosophy - not a Science.

The difference between the kinetic theory and string theory is that the former worked very well, but it made double duty with classical thermodynamics.
