Massage Mondays - Direction of Stroke - Sports Massage and Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy

Historically we have been taught to deliver our strokes towards the heart with the belief that this will aid the flow of blood and works in conjunction with the lymphatic system.

This long-held belief is not supported by research and the idea that we can influence direction and rate of flow is probably wishful thinking.

I believe as soft tissue therapists we can affect the tissue but the mechanism by which we accomplish this requires a more in-depth conversation. However, I will say that even though we cannot claim to increase flow or flush 'toxins', we can have an effect on the tissues ability to initiate and assist a better recovery and healing rate.

My clients still come back despite my conservative claims because they feel better, move better, and believe they are getting better.

Hi there great content. I have a question I need to answer for a course if anyone could help?
As the massage therapist proceeds from one area of the body to another, what rule must they remember?
Much appreciated 🙏
