Roy Keane left Manchester United after criticising his teammates for a 4-1 defeat to Middlesbrough in 2005. Sir Alex Ferguson said he had no choice but to let him go, otherwise he would've lost control and be viewed differently by his players.

"Fergie was a made guy and Roy wasn't. There was nothing we could do about it."

Keane and Ferguson was footballs answer to Stone Cold vs Vince Mcmahon's beef 😂

Let’s all be honest Keane would not have been let go of if he was 28 years old.

Fergie and Keane relationship was like that of Father and Eldest Son of the family, who never got along well although they had similar thought process and knew what was the best for the family ( team). These two have to be best captain/manager duo of all time.

Fergie: As United manager, I'm gonna give you a testimonial & pay you the rest of your contract
Keane: That's your job

Every team needs a Roy Keane figure but as he’s one of a kind, no chance of that. Maybe because he had Brian Clough manage him before Ferguson, he speaks with a great self belief and wisdom! A marvellous captain and leader, who always gave 100%. You are a true legend Roy!

Sad to see Roy Keane leave on bad terms with fergie other than that one of the best captains to grace the league. Tbh few other players left on bad terms like Beckham and stam

I love Roy, I love Sir Alex! It was sad that this had to end the way it did but, looking back after so many years, it was the only possible end.

The lads who played with Roy all talk with great reverence for him. That says alot.

One of the main reasons Ferguson consistently won was know one was bigger than the team. No one could make demands, think they run the place and that the team revolves around them. One of the big problems we see with managers today

Fergie was the boss and Roy overstepped his mark, simple. Roy was at the tail end of his career and I am curious if he would have gotten away with it a couple of years earlier !

Roy Keane and Alex Ferguson were like Johnny Rotten and Malcolm McLaren. So alike, and so much affection for each other, that it had to end in tears

Roy Keane is a tortured soul, he's running the game against Juventus Champions League semi one minute then walking out on his National team the next, a force of nature in both directions but undoubtedly the most talented captain the Prempership has/will ever witness

That's strong management. MU reach UCL final 3 times after Keane left.

"If I had have let it pass I think the players would have viewed me differently". This is the most important part of being a manager in any circumstance. You need to be able to control how you're viewed as it intrinsically links to how you want the team under you to perform. It's why Poch fell apart at Spurs and why Wenger fell apart at Arsenal and why Mourinho falls short after a few seasons at any club. They lose control of their persona.

when a player thinks he’s bigger than the club it’s time to go. Roy keane or phillis jones makes no difference .
