It’s known by some as the ‘Centre of the World’. Simon Sebag Montefiore charts the rise of Istanbul from pagan trading post to capital of three empires and two religions. This one metropolis has been held by the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Each left its mark in its architecture, traditions and in the communities who still populate this vast modern conurbation of 14 million people.

Sad to see what this city has been reduced to compared to it's glorious ancient and medieval past.

The British Empire marched into Constantinople in November 1918. And that changed their world forever, as it did the middle east.

Some monumental works regarding the Greek Byzantine Empire by two experts of Byzantine History, include;

Warren Treadgold

“A Concise History of Byzantium”,
“A History of the Byzantine State and Society”,
“Byzantium and Its Army, 284–1081”,
“The Byzantine Revival, 780–842”.

Sir Steven Runciman

“Byzantine Civilization”,
“The Fall of Constantinople 1453”,
“The Great Church in Captivity: A Study of the Patriarchate of Constantinople from the Eve of the Turkish Conquest to the Greek War of Independence”,
“Byzantine Style and Civilization”,
“The Last Byzantine Renaissance”.

All epic. Truly, an academic treasure.

The people this series and many others call Byzantines NEVER called themselves that. They called themselves Roman, as do an increasing number of historians today. The (egregiously) mispronounced and misnomered promo bodes caution as to the content that will follow.

Greece is the only nation in Europe, at least, that hasn't liberated its historical capital, Constantinople. Came close to succeed almost a century ago but didn't happen

I have visited Istanbul 3 times, and still haven't seen everything yet. My first visit was a long layover in 2015 & 2023. I spend 3 weeks traveling all over Turkey in 2019. I hope this series will have a longer episode on the underground Roman reservoir, it's still standing after all thousands of years. It was featured in ANGEL AND DEMON, part 2 of the Davinci Code

The city is located in Southeastern THRACE.
Byzantium was an ancient THRACIAN settlement...
It has been suggested that the name is of THRACIAN origin. It may be derived from the THRACIAN personal name Byzas.
The name Lygos for the city, which likely corresponds to an earlier THRACIAN settlement, is mentioned by Pliny the Elder in his Natural History.
