Belisarius was my favorite character, such a badass, top 10 characters who could beat goku, his fights with vitiges and gelimer were my favorite in that arc.
Basil comes a close second in the golden macedonian arc, the best arc in the series imo.
Alexios komnenos was the best written character, his never give up attitude carried the komnenian restoration arc.
The wrath of the plague was my least favorite arc just meaningless deaths for the sake of deaths, all those characters that could have gotten development. Also I think the protagonists get nerfed after that arc, just more reasons why that arc sucked.
The sassanids strike back arc dragged on too long and felt too fillerish at times all those pointless wars, plus the sassanids overstayed their welcome in the story
Khalid al-walid was my favorite villain, he brought tension into the story never before seen, I was worried for our heros after yarmouk.
When venice revealed itself to be the big bad in the 4th crusade arc, I was shocked. Still the greatest anime villain reveal of all time. Also I teared up at the sack of constantinople.

Although the plot armour is too thick sometimes, when the normans, the bulgars and the arabs were on the verge of destroying the good guys, something always saves them. The worst deus ex machina is "timur" when the ottomans were on the verge of conquering constantinople.
