Why I swapped my 2018 iPad Pro for an M2 iPad Pro

I bought a 12.9-inch M2 iPad Pro twice this year. The first time, it went back to Apple, but this time I decided to keep it for two very specific reasons. But was it really worth upgrading from the 2018 iPad Pro?

I had a 2018 Pro that I just handed off to my daughter, and I got the M2. The old one is still great. The main place I saw large performance differences, anecdotally, was when she and I play Roblox together. It takes me like 1/3rd the time to load any given environment.

I ended up getting the 11 inch M2 pro last week. Been absolutely loving it. My First iPad ever.. Got my fiancé who works at home a purple mini when it came out i forget when that came out. Been loving it for media consumption around the house, photo and video editing on the go. We travel a lot for business and the 11 inch is the perfect sweet spot to just put in my bag. Girls a student so ended up getting it 100 off and a 100 dollar gift card on the spot after I bought it. Did a glass and a otter box military folio with it. Will probably now only want the Apple Pencil 2.

I have the M1 12.9” iPad Pro and I love it, mainly for the XDR screen. I really prefer watching movies & TV shows that are in HDR on this as opposed to my 43” TV which doesn’t handle colors & HDR as well as the iPad does.

Please be well again soon, Mark! Also...good on you for having gotten the MOST use out of your "old" 2018 iPad Pro. More of us need to be more use-case-driven than fashion-forward fanatics. YOUR use case for using your Logic Pro is unassailable! Use the heck out of that thing!

Last week, I upgraded from an 8th gen iPad to the 11" M2 iPad Pro and paid $749 USD. As you can imagine, everything feels like a significant upgrade. I intend to use it as my consumption device and my on-the-go multiple display for my M1 MBA which I use for work. I almost bought a refurbished 2018 version but the age of the device caused me to pause and buy the current model. The beauty of Apple iPads is that it takes them several years to feel obsolete. Even my 8th gen was still giving me a good experience. I am thrilled what I got with this upgrade cycle, though.

I traded up like you from a 12.9" 2018 iPad Pro to an M2 iPad Pro as I use the Procreate painting app. I can now work with much larger canvases, so I don’t have to enlarge when printing on a 24" large format printer or when displaying output in 8k format.

Serendipity indeed! Just upgraded from 1st generation iPad Air to 11inch ipad pro m2. I have lots of underwater footage I have not edited yet so the m2 just became the perfect tool!

I bought the M2 ipad pro 12.9 and it's the best tablet I've ever used. (and yes, I have 8 different tablets at home). It's the fastest in many applications and I use it for:
- Wirelessly tether to my Sony A7RV
- Artstudio Pro
- Edit photos on the go using capture one
- Edit video on the go using Final Cut Pro. Especially personal travel videos where I don't want to carry the 16" macbook pro around.
- Watch HDR movies
- When I'm not using it, it's a dock to control smart home devices.

The reason I could never downgrade my iPad is because I play at half dozen games on the regular and close to it dozen throughout the year On my iPad pro M2 and I am able to have all the graphics turned up to maximize with out the iPad heating up or dying fast and I tried those setting on older iPads and it’s a no go

Tbf for a long while, the 2018 iPad Pro has still been a recommended buy. Only if you were using an older iPad Pro would anyone really need to upgrade to an M series iPad Pro. Maybe the M3 will have the redesign that a lot of us have been waiting for. But until then, since I am someone who won’t use Final Cut or Logic Pro, then I won’t see the need to upgrade unless this iPad stops working, and then it’ll be annoying as it will be more powerful than my iMac….

I’m an illustrator and I updated to the M2 iPad Pro from the 2018 model. I’m so glad I did. There is a night & day difference using the hover venture in Procreate. 2018 was a great iPad but my new iPad is AMAZING. Can’t recommend it enough for digital artists.👍

I'm using 2018 iPad Pro and I agree with you completely. If there is no need to use those super pro apps, 2018 iPad Pro is working perfect fine in 2023.

That display is enough of a difference for me. I love watching movies and shows. And man this and the M1 iPad Pro get 1600 nits peak brightness. This is better than my tv haha.
