CUGH 2022 Virtual Global Health Conference March 28-April 1, 2022
Satellite Sessions March 21-25, 2022

Calls to "decolonize" global health are increasing, but many educators are unclear how to lead the critical conversations that must occur to foster systemic and systematic change. This session will prepare educators to integrate decoloniality into global health training programs and to facilitate uncomfortable dialogue about inequities, racism, systemic oppression, structural violence, and the legacies of colonialism and neo-colonialism in the field of global health. This session will orient future facilitators of the novel GHEARD (Global Health Education for Equity, Anti-Racism and Decolonization) curriculum developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, in collaboration with CUGH and the Association of Pediatric Program Directors, by addressing the complexity of these critical conversations and introducing a shared vocabulary and the tools for engagement. Using interactive learning methodology, this session will begin with moderated conversations about intersectionality and privilege in global health, followed by case-based discussions that will demonstrate facilitators’ strengths and limitations in leading these conversations. Small group participants will then discuss their own readiness to facilitate these discussions using a trauma-informed approach, as well as how to assess their institution’s readiness to support these critical conversations. Finally, participants will examine how GHEARD tools can be used effectively to meet learners at their level of proficiency.
