The Beatles didn't know music theory either and in the recording studio they were laughed at. Who's laughing now? Kurt and Paul McCartney wrote song damn good songs without theory

I love technical wizards like Rhoads and EVH, riff meisters like Hetfield and Mustaine.
I worship Iommi and Cantrell.

But I also absolutely appreciate a guy that isn't trying to do too much with the guitar. He's writing memorable songs with it that hit you in the 'feels'.
Cobain is no guitar god, but a helluva songwriter that captured the imagination and attention of millions.

To be a great guitarist you really don't need to read music or as zappa would say score your songs. That isn't the deciding factor of decent guitarists.
