When you fry the rice it has to be light brown, like a toasted brown, then you have to add chicken broth when you add tomato sauce and adding a little bit of salsa to the rice wouldn't hurt with a sprinkle of cilantro on top. Then you let the rice cook for 20 minutes after it's come to a boil, with the lid on at a simmer, so the rice is puffy and soft, you don't want a hard stiff rice. Spanish rice is not supposed to be hard and not soft and puffy.
