Testing Winter Tires for Ice Braking

An axel jump? Great for figure skaters; not so much for cars. We test winter tires on an ice skating rink to make sure the ones you buy brake when you need them to.

CR, We need a side by side comparison of the same model with and without winter tires.

Contrary to what one might expect, ABS can increase stopping distances on snowy/icy surfaces. Here’s why: Without ABS, locked tires dig into the snow/ice, creating a wedge in front of the tire that helps bring the car to a stop even during skidding. With ABS, this wedge doesn’t form, and skidding is prevented. However, the stopping distance actually increases with engaged ABS.

Wow that's interesting that they have a relationship with an ice rink for this testing. Pretty cool.

Now that CU's testing for ice braking again, it would be great for CU to revisit the tires it couldn't test during the Covid lockdowns (which I assume are less strict now), especially the All Weather ones, so we can see which of 'em are good on ice.

They key trick is top break so softly that the tyres keep spinning

You're not breaking on ice regardless you're just hoping you don't slide into something

That cool to see how the braking works on ice roads or bridges

If all your brakes lock up then ABS thinks things are just fine. Maybe the wheels can take turns with lower brake pressure to try to have at least one wheel testing for slipping.

Does this vehicle not have ABS? Would stop much faster without slamming on the brakes when driving on ice. Pump them to make it more real world.

Wish they would’ve clarified if they disabled ABS or if it failed to engage

He slammed the brakes which makes you slip and slide on ice you want to gradually slow you’re car down and pump the brakes if you dont wanna slide like that

We need testing of Winter tires and regular dry and wet conditions where they're used most of the time. Just testing them in their intended snow and ice is not relevant when most of the time they are driven on dry and wet roads

Doesn't matter what tire you have, you gonna slide on sheer ice.

Devon has a longer arm length than majority of the arm wrestlers. He knows the rules that's why everyone is calling his bs and calling him a cheater.

Yk what tho it’s incredible that this vehicle even moves on ice, I’ve never had snow tires on my car but I think I should get some lol

I really wish if you could compare All terrain tires with 3 peak mountain snow flake rating for 4wd owners please. Just want to see how bad they are compared to a non studded dedicated winter tire. I'm thinking of A/Ts with 3PMSF like BFG KO2, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, Goodyear Wrangler Duratac (These are the ones I have on my 4Runners). I got Load C and Standard Load of these running around 32-33psi if that matters. Too bad dedicated winter tires are not strong enough for my use unless I can change tires on side of the road before I hit the road after a trail run in winter.

It would hopefully be a better result if the car had abs
