Making mistakes is amazing because it shows people you are trying, your human and vulnerable. It really endears people to you.

Very funny stories. It works both ways too. My husband is from Spain and when he met my parents 52 years ago he told them that he was really impressed by the "skycrappers" in New York City!

Thank you Dr. Evans for this video.
It boosted my husband's and my confidence so much. There were times when we felt discouraged especially after making mistakes. It's nice to know that even someone who is already almost a native speaker had to go through those times.

When my friend was on a busy bus or train in Japan he would always say "sAwatte kudasai" when offering little old Japanese ladies his seat, not realising that "sUwatte kudasai" means please sit down, sawatte kudasai means please touch

Excellent examples Danny, that have brought back some embarrassing, yet wonderful memories. I lived on the Costa del Sol, Spain and Gibraltar 1980/81. Most of my friends were Gibraltarian Spanish and so I did make an effort to learn some Spanish at least. We were out and about together on a very warm day. I knew that 'calor' was warm and that 'caliente' means hot. Anyway, I declared on this very hot day... Estoy muy caliente!! The looks, and then the hysterical laughter! Haha... I never made that particular mistake again. I have lots of examples like that. It's an important part of learning, isn't it. I have found myself in many funny situations that I've learnt from, situations that could have had very serious consequences. Like in Paris around 1978. We, my then French partner and I, were at Des Deux Magots, a wonderful café / restaurant on Saint-Germain des Prés, Paris. I knew just a smattering of French - I didn't pay much attention at school. The waiter approached and asked what we would like... I declared: Je suis femme... instead of J'ai faim. He never spoke to me for the rest of the night... the waiter loved it; his Parisian indifference disappearing in a flash. That's how I remember the difference between being a woman and being hungry. Muchas gracias por tu contribución. ¡Excelente! Todavía me estoy riendo. Ja!

I took 5 years of French in high school, and it is clashing with Spanish in my head! Thank you!

I’m still learning Spanish but I’ve taught people at work some words and phrases and one mistake I’ve heard people make is
“Tengo hombre” instead of “tengo hambre”
Quite the difference in meaning lol

My funniest mistake happened on a train in France after I had travelled to Cuba. When a server asked me a question in French, I responded to him in Spanish. When he gave me a coffee I automatically thanked him in Spanish. I couldn't seem to stop myself. Too funny!

Thank you for telling me about the mistakes you made . I am still learning I can't get the words to remain in my head. My teacher moved to Arizona and young man at work was helping me he gotten let go so I don't have anyone to practice with. So I keep going back to your lesson. Since covid19 I am unable to get back in class. Thank You for your lesson.
