Oda very rarely gives G5 Luffy the portrayal as a madman like the anime does. Most of the time the manga comes of as him just not taking the fight seriously. In the anime you get the scenes where his body is silhoueted except for his mouth and glowing red eyes, which makes him feel mote menacing.

I’d argue that Luffy in gear 5 is his most terrifying, not from a power standpoint but a mentality. Cause in gears 2-4 he’s still him he’s angry he’s throwing hands. But gear 5, it’s like your fighting an alien who thinks and acts in a completely different dimension of reality compared to you and it knows it. The genuine danger he poses along with the fact you can’t even make him break his smile is a little haunting when needed to be

There's a cool parallel between both Luffy & Lucci. In Ennis Lobby, Robin warned Luffy not to fight CP9 & he did it anyways. Meanwhile in Egghead, Kaku warned Lucci not to challenge Luffy (Yonko) & he still did it.
