First mistake was going out in the first place. First actual mistake was not having life preservers on all of those passengers and himself.

When the waves are bigger than your boat, it’s time to call it a day!

Move weight to the rear, trim up, keep that bow high and ride it out. Keep heading square into the waves. Don’t have to have a huge boat to do fine through big water.

These are the type of guys you can't tell them they are doing something wrong. "My tiny lake boat with an open bow is JUST fine to go out on the sea in choppy waters" and "My sons don't need life jackets". Stubborn, navie and macho.

You can't go through haulover that slow you need just enough speed for your bow to bounce from wave crest to wave crest without going too fast and launching your whole boat in the air. It's a delicate balance

You have to add power and bring the nose up. Forward motion will throw some water out ! The guy chose to sit there and do nothing ! Turn your nose into the waves and add power as needed...

Especially for him having that rope on the back of the boat just sitting there would have caused a massive problem if it got into the prop
