I think you have the correct approach to encourage people to make games BUT not encourage them to join the industry. There is a lot of people trying to join the industry, very often wearing rose-tinted glasses, which enables companies (especially shady companies) to take advantage of them. Meanwhile, there is a lot of value in making games yourself, even as a hobby.

That bit about subtext really resonates with me. Almost every story has a conflict, an oppression or a message to convey, but the truly great ones relay that message in a thorough and "diegetic" way, where it doesn't feel like the author is preaching directly to the reader/watcher/player. I think you're going to inspire a lot of people to pursue their dreams in a pragmatic manner, Tim!

As someone who got into the industry only maybe a few weeks before finding this channel, I can confirm that this channel is absolutely a great resource to understand the reality of everything going on in the field. Honestly even just having this space where game discussions occur regularly outside of work for me in general has proven to be super inspiring, and any lessons or new ideas I get from the videos themselves are just an extra bonus ontop of that.

To be honest, your work is one of my greatest inspirations for the work I do. I really hope you get to play this next game I’m developing. :)

I’m a network engineer that has been working with the DoD for almost 15 years now and was into computers way before I even worked on a government network. I watch these videos for two reasons.

1.to lean about over lap in our technical fields and confirm or expand on what I know.

2. I enjoy games and like the idea of making one to better learn programming to better my automation skills that are becoming more and more important in the networking space.

It’s great stuff you’re doing here and you have work on some of my favourite games, no clue how I found your channel but happy I did and keep it up!!’

Thanks Tim for all of the videos. I work in the games industry on the software side in a large company & frequently quote/link your videos to my peers. Engineers typically like to keep their technical hat on, but often times the most important thing you can do requires you to take a step back and think about things that aren't code. Your channel has been a great resource to help explain past experiences I've had & help others look at game/software development in different way.

Regarding biases, I try to keep in mind that everyone has at least one weakness & to not immediately fold in everything they tell me or else I'll just inherit their weaknesses. Their stories are merely what they think, and I have to make sense of them. It was mainly intended for reading books & other educational content, but it turned out to have two unexpected products in work as well: 1) when something is "bad", I'm able to pick apart why much more clearly than the average person, and 2) I can stare into the abyss so to speak (e.g. someone who is overly negative) and extract what useful information exists without suffering as much from the abyss staring back at me.

I just want to say that I appreciate how Tim does these videos IN ONE TAKE, snoring dog and all, without any clever cuts or other shenanigans.

I truly hope some new developers will continue the legacy of "Tim Cain'esque" games - Fallout 1 and Arcanum is among my top 5, if not at the top, of my all time favourite games. Both with regards to gameplay, but especially with regards to the world, the branching stories, the consequences of actions, and just the breath of posibilities. Love this channel <3

The game industry seems absolutely brutal and only something you should get into if you're extremely passionate about wanting to develop games.

I used to think I wanted to get into game dev because I liked games. It wasn't until my mid-20s that I realized - no, I just like playing games, I don't want to make them myself.

2:15 Great question. I'm so glad you asked, Tim! I want to replace America's near absolute capitalist corporate ruled aristocracy with a system that provides people with necessities like health care for the sick, food for the hungry, and shelter for the homeless. I want to balance our mixed economic system towards human beings and fullfilling their basic necessities (none of which should ever be sold for a profit). I want to fund education and arts instead of the molitary industrial complex. I want to provide people here with healthcare instead of shoveling tax money at the rich and crossing our fingers to hope that this time it's somehow going to trickle down (much like how Charlie Brown will never kick the football, unchecked revenue will never "trickle down"). Capitalism can still exist, it should just be regulated appropriately

There is no panacea, no cure-all solution, but removing money from our political process is a good place to start. Money has no place in our elections from any industry or lobby interest group or really anyone. So we need to ban elected officials from taking bribes and redistribute the wealth. A ranked choice voting system would elieviate the "lesser of two evils" fatigue that's spreading more and more every election cycle. Reforming the SCOTUS and Senate to be more truly democratic so their decisions more resemble the will of the people (term limits, expanding the senate so the states elect representstives proportionate to their population, and eliminating the electoral college is where I'd start on that).

To summarize, I wouldn't abollish capitalism. I would regulate it, agressively with an emphasis on strengthing the lower classes and rediclstrubte the wealth immediately, hopefully before our entire society suffocates underneath the rotting corpse of capitalism.

Hi Tim! I wanted to join the sea of people and say thanks for all of your effort in presenting a real-world look at the games industry and your creative process. Your videos are educational, insightful, occasionally challenging, and always entertaining.

For over a year now, seeing your Youtube upload notification has become the favorite part of my morning routine, and I haven’t felt that way since watching Saturday morning cartoons.

Thanks again!

excellent words! I've been in the gaming industry since the late 90's.. your words ring VERY true and it's not all "fun and games". Yes, there is fun, and yes there are games, but there is A LOT of business that has to happen and that is rarely fun. (shoutout for the Bard's Tale poster! the construction set was beyond wicked fun to play with!)

That poster is awesome. I think I’ve watched every one of your videos and the interview videos multiple times each (always logged out and unsubscribed until now). Always enjoy hearing your learned perspective on the industry, and especially the tangents into code related content
