The best tip I know to avoid the crying when cutting up onions is to have someone else do it. Works every time.

I have a ceiling exhaust in my apartment. My largest work surface is next to it and stove. I always turn on the fan, peel quickly, then use a new method I learned.:
1. Leave the root on
2. Slice in strips almost to the bottom, rotate to uncut side
3. Repeat step 2.
4. Slice the onion as thick as you would chop yours. Instant chopped onions.
I learned this from Al from Lumnah acres ( YouTube Homestead). A subscriber sent it to him.

Leaving the root end on really works! I very rarely cry and I eat a lot of onions! I also keep them in the refrigerator. ..not sure if that makes a difference though.

An hour ago I was cutting onions and my eyes were burning. You popped into my head. I wondered if you made a video about this. I come to YouTube and BAM- you’re explaining it as my food cooks lol.
Perfect timing.

One of the things I find to greatly reducing onion crying is I keep the roots intact. Not only does it keep the amount of crying down it also makes it much easier to hold on the onion so that it does not slip all over the place making it safer to cut.

To avoid the crying, put the onion in the freezer for 15-20 min

Some funny stuff Levi. Physics is everything. Nothing better than Squirward with onions!

Sometimes I put the onion in the freezer for about 30 mins to an hour before I use it. If I do not know that I am going to be using it and cut it I will burn incense around me while I am cutting it. With your explanation of it this, I see why it helps. Great video of the explanation of this.

For me, it's all about leaving the root alone. Levi, you're great!

Don't forget the eye wipe three hour later. When the burning sets in you relise what you just did.

LOVE the Levi segments!!! I put a piece of bread in my mouth which seems to block the gas from my eyes...until it makes it through/around then I have to grab another piece.

I wear a pair of safety glasses that has the foam around the lenses. It doesn't let any smell into my eyes and I can cut up a million onions and not cry and I'm usually a crier (with onions that is lol).

Avoid breathing thru your nose while cutting onions. This helps a lot, and once the tears start flowing, run your hands under cold water. The tears almost instantly stop.

Eat and chop an onion every day, and you'll be mainly immune. I've been eating an onion a day (most days) for the last five years. It's very rare my eyes are bothered at all now. Every once in a while, though, one still gets me a little teary eyed.
