Показать описание
Cyndi Lauper was born Cynthia on June 20, 1953 in Queens, NY. Her parents divorced when Cyndi was 5 and she had a hard time at school due to her natural flamboyance and was 17 when she left it behind to discover Canada hitch hiking across the country with her dog Sparkle. She attended art college in Vermont after that, but found her creative desires were not being met.
Going back home to New York, she did odd jobs and worked all kinds of gigs working so hard she damaged her vocal cords with doctors advising she would never sing again. A friend suggested a vocal coach who was able to get Cyndi her voice back. Fast forward to 1980 when Cyndi joined Blue Angel for one album and then the dissenting group promptly broke up. Cyndi met David Wolff and he got her signed to Portrait Records.
Then it was Cyndi-mania, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" followed by "Time After Time" made her the first female since Petula Clark to have her first two singles go Top 3 and she then gained her third #3 hit with "She Bop" becoming the first female to do so. When "All Through The Night" peaked at #5 she became the first female to pull four Top10 singles from their debut album.
She showed a depth of character in the video for "Time After Time", her poignant performance helped her earn the Grammy For Best New Artist of 1984. I was lucky enough to get a promo version (that I still have) of "She's So Unusual" and the video was already out there. She made really pop music fun again!
The song came about when Cyndi who had seized upon the title for a song she had not yet written entitled "Time After Time" after seeing an ad for the film "Time After Time" 1979 with Christopher Reeve. She thought it was a temporary title but after working with her keyboardist Rob Hyman, realized that no other lyrics would work and agreed to keep the title as "Time After Time".
The simplicity of the music track highlights her considerable vocal talent and she got to flex her acting chops for the wistful video. Rob was the male background voice on the record and I must confess I did get misty eyed from the performance. It is always sad when a romantic relationship ends
The inspiration for the song came from how both songwriters who were having issues in their respective romantic relationships. Hyman was coming out of a relationship, while Cyndi was having problems with her boyfriend and manager, David Wolff.
One of the first lines was written by Rob who contributed "suitcase of memories," which unleashed her creativity with that wonderful line and allowed her to explore her own emotions in the song about her real life experiences at the time.
