The removal of My Computer from the desktop by default (from XP onwards) was a bad decision imo. Putting it back is always the first thing I do when I'm setting up a new user account. And doing so can be a pain when your system administrator restricted the settings available to customize.

Some people say that the reason why "My computer" was renamed to "This PC" is because you no longer own your computer. This may be a little exaggeration, but on Windows 8 onwards Microsoft puts a lot of emphasis on setting up a Microsoft account so they can collect your peronal data.

Funny enough „My Computer“ was translated to „Arbeitsplatz“ („workplace“) in German versions of Windows XP.
Later versions were a lot more faithful to the orginal English terms.
