Hi guys thanks for checking out this video: AJATT 16 Month Update Progress Report | 16 Months Learning Japanese With Immersion

In this video, I talk about hitting month 16 of AJATT. I talk about what I've discovered especially when it comes to adding reading to my repertoire as well as a new app I've started to use regularly.

This is my first update since moving to Japan, so a little insight into that, as well as my overall improvement over the past month in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Thanks for watching

Hey akai are you familiar with the YouTuber Matt vs Japan? I would highly recommend his channel, he is another white guy like yourself, who used the same method to learn Japanese but I believe he is around 11 years in at this point. His Japanese is also pretty good. His channel has great tips and he shares a lot of his theories on language learning. Would recommend. Lately he’s been selling some shady pitch accent programs with Ken Cannon so aside from that his YouTube channel is definitely worth listening to if you don’t already know him. Just a word of advice from someone who’s also been down this path. Hope everything works out for you man!

Nice work! I also started to learn Japanese since april of this year (with a little break for july-august). Majorly in luodingo 😅 I like this experience: vocabulary is step-by-step getting wider, and i can understand more and more interesting sentences. I already will have completed third section soon. Same time, trying to understand smtng in Japanese vtuber's streams. I can, but still a little.
今日私たちはストリームでピカチュウを話しました。👍

Hey great video, good luck with your upcoming italki lesson.
Have you ever thought about dropping AJATT or making a pro/con video?
I think their idea of output is very flawed and to think that early output (pre 1-2years) is 'damaging', baffling.

You go pretty hard on the anki. Im surprised your ratio leans so heavy to anki. Do you feel like you improve more doing anki instead of watching tv/reading?

Small question. I focus when doing immersion on Total comprehension but also pitch accent and the flow of talking. Do you train your pitch accent regognition, or do you skip it? Like to know

It’s said that after 16 months and finishing 10, 000 Anki cards, one can achieve basic fluency. You’re already close to having 10, 000 cards, but it seems like you haven’t reached basic fluency yet. Is it because you didn’t start reading earlier? I’ve been looking forward to your “graduation report, ” as it would be a great motivation for me.

I’ve been studying for 9 months now and have over 5, 000 Anki cards. I’ve already started trying to read light novels, but I can only understand them by listening to the audiobooks while reading the text. However, I’ve recently started to enjoy them this way, and it’s really exciting. Being a native Chinese speaker might give me some advantage, though.

I speculate that reading will have a huge impact in the later stages of learning. Have you considered trying the audiobook + text reading method? It might help you make significant progress in a short time and avoid pronunciation issues caused by pure text reading. After finishing a book, you could listen to the audio a few more times on its own.

The amount of input from subtitles in videos is like a small stream, while the input from novels is like a flood. I think reading will help you reach fluency much faster. Wishing you all the best in achieving fluency soon!
