I wonder if the problem with creating better solutions is these existing monoliths grow in complexity faster than we can create something new, adding new features and support for hardware that other people/projects quickly become dependent on.

How do we compete with the likes of linux and windows? Perhaps an option is to target niche, semi-popular hardware (think raspberry pi or similar), so we can do just a few things well and be competitive, before expanding to bigger systems? That's my little idea anyway.

Now that I've gone back and heard about the code duplication removal, I get your concern with GRUB and using a HAL to abstract the loading process. Makes sense.

I agree with your observations on the HURD. I use it daily so I can create patches for it and I'm consistently amazed at how slow it is. My Arch Linux VMs feel like they're a couple orders of magnitude faster.

Maybe make the HAL a risc-V vm so you're at least targeting cutting edge hardware if the legacy support is non-negotiable.
