This is the best way to get the material started in the foot. Not sure why it's not used by everyone. Getting started is the most frustrating part of the process and this method makes it simple.

I've never been able to make mine work. I have been trying to make square or rectangle furoshikis for gift wraps (basically scarves, but cotton) but a) cant make the narrow hem foot work very well, and b) don't know what to do at the ends / corners if I DO make it work. I will try again - I was possibly trying to run the machine too fast. Thank you for this!

I just received and tested a set of rolled hem presser feet. I think your trick with the stitching at the beginning to have the threads to pull the fabric through are going to be a lifesaver. One question: as the very beginning of the hem seems a bit "iffy", how can I compensate for this on a shirt hem (where the front plackets are already finished)? Will I still have to do my hand-rolled hems?
