Показать описание
Two objects (m1 = 5.00 kg and m2 = 3.00 kg) are connected by a light string passing over a light, frictionless pulley as in the figure. The 5.00-kg object is released from rest at a point h = 4.00 m above the table. (a) Determine the speed of each object when the two pass each other. (b) Determine the speed of each object at the moment the 5.00-kg object hits the table. (c) How much higher does the 3.00-kg object travel after the 5.00 kg object hits the table?

Why do we not consider the force of tension when solving this problem?

In part c, do we need to cancel out the mass of object 2 before we calculate the maximum height of the object 2 when the object 1 to contact to the table?

quick question, If the weight of the masses were switched (lets say m1 is lower than m2) does the formula you used change? or does anything change in that matter?

Thank you so much! This was really helpful!

the formula he came up with is incorrect for the final v² = 2 (m1 - m2) g h / (m1 + m2)
this is the correct manipulation.

You forgot to take the square root of the velocity after you plugged in the values! V is 1.77 m/s not 3.13 m/s.
