"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is one of the best, if not the definitive best comedy shows ever made. In this video, I break down what makes Sunny so great and how it has changed the way we view comedy forever.

My favorite fan theory about the show is that the reason every episode starts with a time stamp is because all the episodes are being recounted in court and the gang are all testifying against each other.

I also like that the talking isn't all smooth, everyone waiting neatly for their turn to speak. The arguing, shouting through eachother makes it feel more real.

I think the charm behind dee is that in most sitcoms, the only woman is always some sort of love interest and is normally sexualized. Here, she is literally seen as the opposite and no one expects the latter.

I love how Dee started off as the straight man of the group, but Kaitlen Olson saw how fucked up the rest of the gang were and was like "No I want to be worse than them"

I love the touch that just about everyone that comes into contact with the Gang has their lives almost permanently changed for the worse, plays into the theme of the gang being awful people

My favorite part about this show is how they maintain continuity between each episode, even to the point where an event will be referenced 5 or 6 seasons later. They manage to keep it subtle tho so you wont be missing any important plot points if you havent seen the previous episodes

and for the cereal trial, that actually happened to glenn! he actually drives eating a bowl of cereal (or at least he used to) and actually got rear ended by someone. he came into the writers room furious and when they found out he was eating a bowl of cereal rob knew they had to make it an episode. rob discusses it in a rolling stone interview i believe!

Dee has easily done the darkest and most diabolical things in the show which is saying something with this group. The whole thing with the male stripper and his daughter was soul wrecking, darker than a moonless night, and one of the most funny events to happen on the show. Plus she instantly understood Dennis with _the_ _implications_ .

This show is engraved into my mind. The characters, the quotes, the crazy shenanigans, everything

This is 5 minutes of how sunny influenced things and 30 minutes of a summary of every character who was ever on screen

The narrator is wrong about how Danny Devito became a cast member. Rob McElhenney did not "come knocking, " in search of Devito. McElhenney has told this story in many interviews, such as the Late Show with Steven Colbert. According to McElhenney, an executive called him after season one and pitched the idea of having Devito come on to help boost ratings. Because McElhenney didn't want to mess up the chemistry of the cast, he flat out told the executive "no." Then the executive told McElhenney that if they weren't going to take on Devito, then the show was going to be canceled.

What I love best about Sunny is I watched one of those “out of context” videos of it before watching the show and it was like having a fever dream - most videos like that it’s just some funny lines where you can imagine how they got to that point, but with Sunny it was literally incomprehensible. So naturally I then watched the show itself, and even with the relevant context it’s still so deeply weird I couldn’t help but fall in love with it

I don't think I laughed at anything harder than when uncle Jack threw his fake hands by accident in the court

A part of this show's enjoyability is how much fun the cast has making it. The actors on That 70s Show are actors. These guys? They're friends. They make episodes that remind you of being drunk with a group and laughing over nothing

malcolm in the middle is seen as one of the first tv comedy users of the single camera style, so I find it really interesting that both shows tend towards the more 'ugly truth' side of poverty/family/life in general

My favorite part of this show is that the gang almost takes turns per episode being the sane one lmao my favorite being the inspection episode, where everyone is being insane while Charlie of all people is trying to hold everything together

I wouldn't say it has changed comedy. That would imply that it influenced other shows. I still see no other show that dares to go as far as sunny.
What i don't like about most sitcoms is that they turn into dramas too often, especially in later seasons, and the comedy takes a back seat. This show is conistently funny and never falsely sentimental. I love that.

I think in hindsight it was a good idea to set the show in Philly instead of LA. We’ve seen La in tons of shows, movies, games, books, etc. but never get to see Philly. I know this show was (hell still is) very popular here in Pennsylvania!

I'm a lyft driver, I drove a lawyer one time and asked him if he practiced bird law. We didn't speak for the remaining 15 minutes.
